How the major stock indexes fared on Thursday (AP)

AP – Encouraging economic reports sent stocks slightly higher Thursday. Banks, energy and technology companies were the biggest gainers. Consumer goods companies traded lower. The number of people applying for unemployment benefits dropped last week to the lowest level since April 2008, and a measure of future economic activity had a big increase last month.
